Our centre offers comprehensive fertility care,
including the initial work up and treatment of both partners. We
offer on site ultrasound, blood work for hormonal monitoring,
ovulation induction and controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, and
intrauterine insemination (sperm washing. In conjunction with the
main ONE Fertility office in Burlington, we also offer in vitro
fertilization (IVF) and therapeutic donor insemination.
Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic
loss (also called recurrent miscarriage) is a challenging condition.
It is diagnosed when a woman under the age of 35 has had three or
more miscarriages, or a woman over the age of 35 has had two or more
miscarriages. Dr. Cockwell has a special interest in recurrent
pregnancy loss, having done research and presented at provincial
and national conferences on the topic. She has a wide referral base
for recurrent pregnancy loss, and sees women for the work up and
management of this condition.
Minimally Invasive and
Advanced Operative Management
Many fertility centres are focussed solely on cycle monitoring and
fertility treatment, but we feel that this does not address all
potential issues that can face a couple. Dr. Cockwell has advanced
training in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), and is able to offer
laser laparoscopy for endometriosis and adhesions through Oakville
Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She also has extended training in
advanced laparoscopy for ovarian disease, removal of fibroids, tuboplasty, hysteroscopic surgery, complicated pelvic surgery and
tubal reversal procedures, such that patients are often referred to
us from other physicians and centres for care.
Gynaecological issues in the paediatric and
adolescent population benefit from
care and training. Issues including delayed or early
puberty, anatomical issues (imperforate or sepatate hymen, etc.),
problems with periods, contraception and issues with sexuality are
all sensitive topics. Work up and management in an
accepting, comfortable environment is essential.
Sometimes, all that is needed is reassurance that what a child or
young adult is facing is normal, but if surgical management is
required, Dr. Cockwell also has additional training in the area.
The first trimester
of pregnancy is an exciting and sometimes nerve-wracking time,
patients who have had issues in the past. At ONE Mississauga, we are
uniquely aware and sensitive at how
stressful this time can be, and we offer early pregnancy monitoring
for not only our fertility patients and patients with recurrent pregnancy loss, but also other
high risk patients that are referred by their
family doctors or emergency departments. Routine blood work and
ultrasound monitoring can provide reassurance and alleviate some of
the stress of this time. We also provide routine antenatal care,
including integrated prenatal screening (IPS, which is screening for
Down Syndrome, spina bifida and other pregnancy issues). After the
first trimester, referrals are organised for patients, based on
their preference, to a midwife, obstetrician, or family doctor who
provide ongoing obstetric care.
Although fertility and pregnancy care are the
primary reasons patients are referred to our centre, we
general well-woman care, and ongoing follow up for women with
endometriosis or other complicated gynaecological conditions. In
addition, women in the peri-menopausal, menopausal or post
menopausal time may be referred for management of issues (irregular
bleeding, hot flashes, night sweats or other menopausal symptoms
etc) during this transition time. The WHI trial has left many women
and their doctors confused as to the safe and appropriate use of
hormonal therapy, as well as the role of alternative therapies,
which we can discuss at length before deciding if and what treatment
(if any) is appropriate.
with fertility and recurrent pregnancy loss can be difficult and
emotional charged, for both men and women. The stresses of
infertility and its treatment are well recognised, and can affect
not only outcomes, but also quality of life and relationships.
Because of this, we have a trained psychiatrist on staff to help
with these and other issues. In addition, we offer both individual
and group therapy for individuals and couples dealing with the
depression, grief and loss felt with recurrent pregnancy loss.
